How we began & WHAT ARE CREATED GEMS?

CREATED Gems are not synthetics - they are truly CREATED, as in their chemical composition and gemologically, they are exact replicas of the Natures Creation (follow this link to see Federal Trade Commission’s Guide rules to definition of terms “Created”, “Lab-Created”, etc.).

Gems have been grown by men for many years, first as cheap imitations (mainly glass), then, at the end of 19th Century a French scientist Vernuil produced first real “created” stone - it was a ruby, grown by flame-fusion method. The method was the first step that led people to “create” gems. Although flame-fusion method remains the least expensive-to-date, it is also the method that produces the lowest quality (purity and optical characteristics). Due to the fact that this process is being subjected to the open-air  environment (as opposed to vacuum environment of Flux, Pulling and the Hydrothermal processes), crystals produced by it contain enormous amount of air bubbles that trap light, diminishing dispersion and “dulling“ the stone; this effect causes stones not to shine quite as good and in many cases stones will seem “sleepy”.  Although Vernuil’s achievement was significant, he could not produce an emerald, utilizing his process. The limitations of the process were obvious - the melting temperatures of the substances used (aluminum oxide and chromium for doping it red color) are much lower than these of beryllium, that is used for growing of emeralds and impure environment does not allow for infiltration of chemicals needed to induce the growth process on the seed. In the 1930-s first “created” emeralds were produced using flux technique. Even though the developed process was time consuming, expensive and these stones had no water inclusions (an integral part of a natural emerald), this development reigned supreme for about 50 years. Then, in the late 1960-s a group of young Russian scientists at the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, while working on a top-secret government project, produced fine emerald crystals in a Hydrothermal environment. This process duplicated the finest emeralds from the Ural Mountains and was very efficient. Although their objective to grow an optically pure crystal for use in laser technology was never achieved, never the less, it produced beautiful stones with color and hues ranging from dark-blue to intense-yellow. In the later years, during Michael Gorbachiovs restructuring program, The Russian Academy of Sciences was encouraged to look for means to engage in marketing its developments in order to become an independent entity within the academic community. A Joint Venture Tairus was born in 1989. Tairus took scientific achievements many steps further and today it is the only world producer of Hydrothermaly grown Corundum (Ruby, Blue, Yellow, Pink and Padparadscha Sapphires). It also grows fine “Created” Alexandrites, utilizing its own method of floating method process, also known as horizontal crystallization”.
